nutrition.org -- Guide for Authors, Charges to Authors
AUTHOR FEES
Authors will be billed for the following items:
- Manuscript submission fee: There is a $75 fee for manuscripts submitted to The Journal of Nutrition. Authors are able to pay the submission fee during the submission process using a credit card. Payment can also be made by check (see instructions below for details). Bank transfers and institutional purchase orders are not accepted. The submission fee will be waived for invited authors, authors of manuscripts included in approved ASN annual meeting symposium publications, and corresponding authors who are members of the American Society for Nutrition (ASN). The Journal will consider requests to waive the fee for cases of financial hardship (see instructions below). Papers cannot move forward in the review process until the submission fee has been received.
- Color reproduction costs: Authors are encouraged to use color figures when they will enhance the presentation of the data. Authors will be charged the subsidized rate of $400 per figure. During the manuscript submission process, authors must indicate that color figures are included, and that they agree to pay the color reproduction fee of $400 per figure. Note: If color is deemed to be nonessential by the JN editors, the cost for color will be $800/figure.
- Reprint orders: A reprint order form with rate schedule is sent with author proofs. If authors order at least 100 reprints and their supply subsequently becomes exhausted, they may request permission to reproduce a specific limited number of additional reprints.
- Page charges: Authors will be billed $75 per page for the first seven published pages and $120 per page for each additional page. Page charges will be waived for authors of manuscripts included in approved ASN annual meeting symposium publications. Page charges may be waived by the Society for acceptable reasons such as the lack of funding from grant or institutional sources as verified by an institutional official. Requests for waivers will not affect review of manuscript or delay publication.
- Author Alterations: Authors will be billed for the costs of corrections or changes at the rate of $3.00 per occurance unless they are to correct errors due to editorial, redactory, or printing services.
- NIH-funded papers: Authors whose papers are funded by NIH will be invoiced to have their papers deposited into the PubMed Repository by ASN upon publication. The fee is $20 per deposit for ASN members/$45 per deposit for non-members.
Payment of Manuscript Submission Fee by Check: Checks (US funds/US bank) must be made payable to the American Society for Nutrition, and mailed to the following address: Manuscripts Submission Editor, American Society for Nutrition, 9650 Rockville Pike, Bethesda, MD 20814 USA. SUPPLEMENT FEES
Supplement coordinators will be billed for the following items:
Supplement organizers are required to pay page charges of $250 per published page to help defray the costs of publication. A manuscript submission fee of $75 per manuscript is assessed at the time of manuscript submission, via a separate invoice (not via the online manuscript submission system). The manuscript submission fee will not be returned if a manuscript is rejected, but the manuscript submission fee assessment will be applied toward the supplement page charge assessment. Supplement organizers are charged nominal rates for additional copies of supplements or reprints of articles within a sponsored supplement. Rates are dependent on the length of each copy and the number of copies ordered. Rates for additional copies will be quoted upon request. Additional charges are assessed for the reproduction of color figures ($800 per page), excessive editorial or author alterations, and for the preparation of camera ready art if figures are not supplied in the correct format.
